Worried about paying your mortgage?

If you're having problems with your finances and are worried about upcoming payments, contact us as soon as possible. We'll do all we can to help.

We’ve signed to up to the government’s Mortgage Charter

The UK’s largest mortgage lenders and the Financial Conduct Authority have agreed a set of universal standards with the Chancellor to help borrowers who may be worried about increased mortgage payments.
Scottish Building Society has signed up to the Charter to help support our mortgage customers.
If you're concerned about your mortgage payments, please contact us as soon as possible using the details below. This won’t affect your credit rating and we’ll do all we can to help.

Whether you're struggling with upcoming mortgage payments or can’t pay it on time, get in touch and we'll work with you to try and find a solution.

Talking to your lender about your options won't affect your credit score. Thousands of mortgage borrowers get help from their lender every year.

We'll give you a reasonable amount of time to pay back the money owed, and we'll only repossess your home if we can't solve the issue with you.

We may be able to:

  • Change how you make your payments, or the date you make them.
  • Allow you to pay your mortgage over a longer period of time.
  • Temporarily switch your account to interest only for up to 6 months.
  • Capitalisation of arrears.
  • Further advance
  • Assisted Voluntary Sale

If we can make one of these arrangements with you, we'll explain how it works and give you time to consider it. It's really important that you keep to the plan we agree, telling us quickly if there's a change to your circumstances.

If we can't offer any of these options, we'll explain why and discuss the next steps with you.

There are ways you can help us while we work together to find a solution:

  • Respond as soon as possible if we try to contact you so we can continue providing the support you need.
  • Make sure you keep anyone jointly responsible for paying the mortgage, and/or anyone guaranteeing the mortgage, up to date with what's happening.
  • Seek debt advice if you'd like help managing your finances.
  • Check whether you're eligible for any benefits or government support which could help to increase your income.
  • Check whether you have an insurance policy in place which would assist with your mortgage payments.
  • Tell us if you move to a new address so we can keep in touch.

If your account is in arrears, we may charge you for reasonable administrative and legal costs. We'll tell you the amount you'll have to pay. Any costs will be added to your mortgage balance.
